With habitation by the native Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation dating back at least 4,300 years, Ucluelet (meaning "safe harbor" in Nuu-chah-nulth) has in recent years become an attractive destination for ever-increasing numbers of visitors drawn by the excellent fishing, spectacular natural beauty and diversity of fine accommodations. Located on a peninsula between the sheltered Ucluelet Inlet and the open Pacific, Ucluelet is a gateway to Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands to the southeast, as well as to Long Beach, Tofino and Clayoquot Sound to the northwest. The village itself offers fishing, whale watching, beach combing, nature cruises, storm watching, kayaking and hiking, among other activities. For more information on Ucluelet, visit the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce. Ucluelet can be reached from anywhere in the U.S. Pacific Northwest via Kenmore Air seaplane charter to Ucluelet Harbour or Kenmore Air Express wheeled-plane charter to Tofino-Ucluelet Airport.
