Galiano Island — the self-described "Gem of the Gulf Islands" — is as rich in history as it is in beauty. Long before Spanish explorer Dionisio Galiano came ashore in 1792, the Coast Salish aboriginal people watched eagles ride updrafts from Active Pass, saw otters swimming off the shores, shared their fishing grounds with great blue herons, and watched sea lions and killer whales play in Trincomali Channel. Today, visitors to Galiano can walk the same white-shell beaches and enjoy the same sights and sounds.

Hiking is a leading Galiano pastime. The entire 15-mile eastern shore is open to ramblers, as are the island's high points, Mts. Galiano and Sutil, which command amazing views of the Coast Mountains, Mount Baker, the Gulf and San Juan islands, Vancouver Island and even the Olympic Peninsula. Diving, kayaking, fishing, sailing and golf are also popular Galiano activities.

The island boasts a variety of accommodations, including resorts, inn, cottages, bed & breakfasts and a Provincial Park campsite. Many artists live on the island and their works can be bought in island galleries and craft shops.

Kenmore Air seaplane service to Montague Harbour on Galiano Island resumes April 1, 2010, with one flight a day on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Service becomes daily beginning May 1.
