The most populous of the San Juan Islands, San Juan Island offers a breadth of activities, scenery and lodging and dining options unmatched elsewhere in the islands. On the east side of the island, the town of Friday Harbor — which was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2008 — is the cultural, commercial and governmental hub of the islands, featuring exciting galleries, boutiques, museums and waterfront restaurants. Commanding the northwest corner of the island, the historic village of Roche Harbor offers all the amenities of a classic seaside resort.
