Mayne Island

The pastoral tranquility of modern-day Mayne Island belies its rich and colorful history as a one-time favorite stopover for boisterous prospectors on their way from Victoria to the Fraser River gold rush. Nevertheless, the visitor will still find plenty of history to explore, including the 1892 Springwater Lodge, reputed to be the oldest continuously operating hotel in BC. Top activities for energetic Mayne Island visitors are kayaking and canoeing (rentals and tours are available), as well as diving and cycling. For a good bit of exercise and an awe-inspiring view, tackle the 45-minute climb to the summit in Mount Parke Regional Park, or stroll along some of the many excellent and accessible beaches. The island's main commercial center is Miners Bay, a pleasant village overlooking Active Pass. A number of inns, cottages, B&Bs and a variety of services, shops, galleries and artists' studios are located throughout the island.
