Spring is here and the islands are calling with a plethora of events and festivals. From cooking classes and craft beer dinners to bike tours and poetry readings, San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island will be humming with can’t-miss activities.
Farmers Market & Cooking Class with Chef Gretchen Allison | April 1
The Saturday farmer’s market in Friday Harbor has long been a favorite for locals and visitors alike. In 2013, it moved to the Brickworks Building at the center of town. The barn-style building opens onto a large courtyard. You’ll find everything from locally made goat cheese and cured sausages to hand-made jams and fresh sushi.
April 1, Chef Gretchen Allison will host a special cooking class at the market. The former Chef and Owner of Duck Soup Inn will guide groups of five through making their own goat cheese salad.
Washington Poet Laureate | April 3
Tod Marshall is serving as Washington State’s Poet Laureate from 2016 – 2018. April 3, he’ll take the stage in the Madrona Room at the Orcas Center. Throughout the evening he’ll read from his works, share insights, and answer questions.
Dine for a Cause | April 4
The Friday Harbor House and Chef Jason invite you to Dine for a Cause. The evening will feature a six-course meal crafted from local and seasonal ingredients. And, 100% from the proceeds the dinner will be donated to the USA for the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees. This amazing organization helps provide shelter, food, and vital medical care to refugees around the world.
Write Doe Bay | April 6 – 9
This four-day writer’s workshop will be held at Doe Bay – a tranquil setting that’s attracted and inspired artists for years. Attendees of all genres are welcome, including memoir, fiction, poetry, essay, songwriting, and more. Accommodations and meals are included in the workshop – meaning you’ll not only be treated to fantastic seminars and guided tutorials, you’ll get to enjoy Doe Bay’s renowned cuisine.
Salish Sea Early Music Festival “Art of Modulation II” | April 14
The Salish Sea Early Music Festival is held in small artist-loving communities throughout Washington. With a focus on period instrument chamber music from throughout the Salish Sea, each performance is bold and engaging. April 14, at Brickworks in Friday Harbor, featured artists will include: Jeffrey Cohan (flute), Linda Melsted (violin), Romaric Pokorny (violin and viola), and Jonathan Oddie (harpsichord).
American Craft Beer Dinner | April 21
Coho’s Chef Bill Messick is devising a multi-course food and beer pairing. Working with Double Mountain Brewery’s bold flavors, the menu will embrace the brewery’s unique Belgian yeast and Northwest hop character.
Bite of Lopez | April 28
Sample the best of Lopez Island all in one place! The fourth annual Bite of Lopez will feature tapa’s style bites from several local restaurants and chefs. The ‘Bite’ will be held at the Lopez Island Community Grounds.
Tour De Lopez | April 29
With its gentle slopes and stunning views, Lopez Island offers the best biking in all of the San Juans. Which is why the Tour De Lopez has long been one of the most beloved events. The 14th annual cycling tour is a non-competitive ride on public roads.
The ride will begin at Odlin County Park or Lopez Village. It will end at the Lopez Community Center where you’ll find a 3-course lunch, musical performances, and beer.
SAFE on the Rocks Twilight Glow 5k | April 29
This festive event will kick off with a 5k race. The route ends at the San Juan County Fairgrounds, where there will be glow sticks, glow paint, and a post-race party. Food and music will abound. Plus, there will be a wide variety of family-friendly activities. (Headlamps are required for all runners.)
