Spring has very much sprung in the San Juans. The cherry blossoms are out. The farmer’s markets are humming. And, there are parades and festivals galore.

In addition to the awesome lineup of April events, you’ll also have the chance to partake in:  


Orcas Island Bird & Wildlife Festival | May 5 – 7

For the fourth year, the Orcas Island Bird & Wildlife Festival will celebrate the island’s incredible wildlife. The three-day festival will feature nature talks and wildlife tours. Binoculars are strongly recommended for most activities, as are a sturdy pair of walking shoes and a camera.


Opening Day Boat Parade | May 7

Sponsored by the San Juan Island Yacht Club, the Opening Day Boat Parade will pass by both the Spring Street Landing and the Port of Friday Harbor Marina. Boats of all sizes are welcome, including powerboats, sailboats, and human-powered vessels. Prizes will be awarded to: most creative display of the theme, nautical display of traditional flags, classic wooden boat; and commercial. A special Steak & Prawn dinner will follow, for those who would like to join.


Rock of Orcas | May 11 – 13 & 18 – 20

Bust out your bangles and bandannas. These lively concerts will feature a large cast of locals including three choirs, three dance classes, and two live bands. All proceeds will benefit the Orcas Center.

Open House of the Officer's Quarters at American Camp | May 13

The rich history of the San Juan Islands continues to be maintained in its lush countryside and expertly preserved buildings. During National History Month, many of these historic sites will be opened to the public, like the Officer’s Quarters at American Camp. This is a rare opportunity to get a firsthand look at one of the island’s first military structures.

Friday Harbor Laboratories Open House | May 20

Nestled beside the Port of Friday harbor, the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories has one of the world’s leading research and teaching facilities. During their annual open house, you’ll have the opportunity to take a self-guided tour, talk with scientists, and view demonstrations. There will be marine plants and animals on display, microscopes, plankton sampling and more! This family-friendly event is great for children of all ages. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended, as the facility tour includes routes over rough dock plants, gravel paths, and trails. 

Cruise Into History | May 21

Navigating the waterways has always been a major concern for those traveling to and from the San Juan Islands. This was especially true before the days of GPS and depth finders. During the cruise, you’ll learn about the markers, navigational aids, and light stations captains the earliest settlers depended upon for the delivery of goods and mail.


Traditional Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony | May 29

There’s nothing quite like a small town parade – especially in Friday Harbor. So, bust out your red, white, and blue. Get ready to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have defended and continue to defend America.


26th Annual San Juan Island Artists' Studio Tour | June 3 & 4

With its slow pace and immense natural beauty, San Juan Island is an artist haven. In its 26th year, the annual San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour will include 20 art studios with 60 different artists. This is your chance to see where the local artists work, learn about their process, and even talk to a few artists!


Three Lakes Triathlon, Marathon & Half-Marathon | June 17 & 18

Explore the San Juan Island’s beautiful countryside while stretching your legs. Participants can run a half-marathon or full marathon.
