Brews and Bites

Beer Flight

Leave the pointed pinkies and afternoon tea to the ladies. While Victoria’s well-known for its steaming cups of steeped leaves, the city is home to more than eight microbreweries and a plethora of gastropubs. Start your DIY pub crawl at 10 Acre Commons, where farm-to-table cuisine isn’t just an idea. It’s a practice. Oysters are half off at happy hour daily.

Other stops may include Bard and Banker, housed in the historic Bank of British Columbia Building; Garrick’s Head Pub, which has been fortifying thirsty travelers since 1867; and

The Drake, where the focus is on West Coast Craft Beer and the vibe is casual to its core.

For a brew on the patio, check out Canoe Brewpub. You’ll be treated to a first-hand look at the brewery’s operations and a chance to try poutine – a Canadian favorite of fries topped with cheese curds. Finally, no list would be complete without Spinnakers, Canada’s first gastropub.

Caffeine Loaded

To keep the party rolling right along, be sure you and the boys can get your coffee fix. You won’t find a Starbucks on every corner here in Victoria. Rather, check out some of the smaller, local joints where the patrons are regular Victoria residents. Among the top picks are Hey Happy Coffee, the land of pour over magic; Habit, where quality and sustainability deliver a smooth, low-acid espresso; and Café Fantastico, a family-run roaster committed to quality beans.

Brunch Like it’s Your Job

Eggs Benedict

Victoria is unofficially the eggs Benedict capitol of the world. Chefs here know their way around hollandaise and egg yolk, so much so that their brunch menus have started to push the boundaries. Influenced by cuisines from around the world, you’ll be treated to a wide variety of egg-yolk loaded breakfast options.

Race Around in the Ocean

Zodiac whale watching tours in Victoria

Prince of Whales offers zodiac whale watching tours. These fast pontoon boats sit low in the water, racing through the ocean waves and letting you get up close and personal with the wildlife.

Victoria also offers some ‘calmer,’ land-based adventures, like Beacon Hill Park. Spanning 200 acres, it offers a variety of trails to wander and open fields in which you can play a spontaneous game of touch football. The floating community at Fisherman’s Wharf is speckled with shops and outdoor eateries. Munro’s Books is like a cathedral to reading, featuring an extensive selection of food-packed memoirs and travel reads.

Kick it into High Speed

Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit

North of Victoria, just over an hour drive from the Inner Harbour, the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit offers a high-speed adventure for car enthusiasts. Referred to as a 'playground for serious racers,' this pro course lets even the novice driver kick it into high speed. With 19 turns, visitors can ride the circuit. And if you're willing to spend a bit more, you can put the pedal to the metal yourself!
