On the northern side of San Juan Island, nestled on a dock in the sheltered Roche Harbor waters, you’ll find North Sound Seafood. June through September, husband-wife duo, Keith and Corinne Porter, supply Roche Harbor visitors with seafood so fresh it’s been described as ‘boat-to-plate’ cuisine.
To learn more about why the Porter’s ‘crab shack’ is so special, I connected with Keith. Learn more about this master fisherman.
M: Where do you source the items on your menu?
Keith: My wife and I catch most of it ourselves. What we don’t catch, we buy from other locals – like the oysters and smoked salmon.M: How long have you been fishing?
Keith: I have been fishing all my life. I’m originally from California, where both my grandfather and my dad were commercial fisherman.
M: When did you come to the San Juans?
Keith: I moved here about 32 years ago, but North Sound has been in operation for the last 20 years.M: How quickly do you sell out?
Keith: We try really hard not to sell out. It happens, of course. But we know folks are coming to get something for dinner or lunch and we don’t want to disappoint.
M: Do you and Corinne have a favorite catch?
Keith: Well…the prawns are really good. We eat the crab and oysters. We like the smoked salmon and clams. We eat it all really.
